I have been a Sumi-e painter for almost 20 years and it took 10 years before I felt comfortable in this ancestral technique and dared to show what I do.
First because it's never easy to put yourself in danger in front of the critical eye of the public and also because this technique needed to be practiced for a long time before giving something interesting for me.

I graduated from a school of audiovisual trades in 1996 and I would have worked on images all my life, starting with cinema and photography. It was in 2002 that I discovered SUMI-E and I returned to my first love: painting.
SUMI-E is a Japanese technique borrowed from Chinese in the 6th century. It is a watercolor obtained using India ink diluted and applied to paper.
Sumi-e in my opinion consists of a perpetual and endless search for the perfect line. Painting with Indian ink in reserve leaves no room for error. The multitude of techniques within this technique is impressive: Gradients, pressure, brush position, dilution, gesture... All while looking for the best moment to stop painting to let the mind finish the drawing.
I westernized this painting by making portraits and nudes on canvas with a larger gesture on large formats.

The sumi-e has several points in common with the martial arts, in addition to its belonging to the Zen philosophy, its practice contributes to the search for inner peace. Even today, I feel like a beginner and I want to stay that way because I still want to discover, try and search. “The beginner's mind contains many possibilities, the expert's mind contains few. » Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Master
What I have learned over the years is that in my search for the perfect line, my path has no end.
